About Richard Lawton
![]() I feel passionately that life is for living, and that each one of us has a responsibility to fulfill our innate potential. The journey of life is to discover who we are and to seek to be that person to the full. Contentment with our lives and happiness in our relationships with others can only come from a deep place within ourselves. And a key part of discovering that deep place within is to reconcile our minds and bodies. My passion is to help people in that task. I studied massage at Morley College, where I gained the ITEC diploma in anatomy, physiology and holistic massage. During my training I noticed the emotional effects of massage, and it became clear that I was not just touching people's bodies as I worked, but their hearts and minds too. Investigating this further led me to body psychotherapy. So I came to train in Deep Reichian Bodywork at The Open Centre, one of the longest-established centres for bodymind development and training in the UK. ("Reichian" bodywork is so named as it derives from the work of Wilhelm Reich, the famous pioneer of body psychotherapy.) I am currently working on my professional accreditation in Postural Integration, a form of deep bodywork developed by Jack Painter. I have trained in many other bodywork and subtle-energy modalities, including Pulsing, Indian Head massage, Reiki and the Metamorphic Technique. I have also undertaken training in Gestalt and psychodrama groupwork with Ari Badaines, whose work at the Skyros centre has been reported in Top Sante magazine. I am currently doing further training in groupwork at the Gestalt Centre. In the past I was heavily involved in voluntary work with children in playschemes and PHAB clubs, both as an activity playleader and as a member of the management committee of York Playspace Group. During a career in the Civil Service I became Chairman of the Cabinet Office Playscheme Committee. I feel that playfulness is a quality that we should appreciate more as adults - it should not be confined to children. My own journey of personal development and healing has taken me on many paths and has involved many different approaches. Over a period of 8 years I worked with Dr Michael Seear, the respected therapist and healer. (His work has been featured in The Times "Body & Soul" magazine 20 March 2004, and reported on the BBC). My reflections on sexuality led me explore Tantra, through which I gained powerful insights into both personal and societal attitudes towards sexuality. I am indebted to Brigitte Ariel for extending and deepening my understanding of the mind-body split and the spiritual dimension of sexuality. I am a registered member of the Complementary Therapists Association, and am fully committed to the organisation's programme of continuous professional development. This includes deepening and extending my professional skills and understanding, as well as continuing my own journey of self-awareness and personal development.
